Onboarding e-learning: the benefits
Why should you use e-learning for onboarding new employees? Now because it has many advantages. We mention three of them:
- Valuable start
Many new employees feel like they are not contributing anything the first day of work, week or even month. Not a nice feeling. With onboarding via e-learning you give new employees a meaningful agenda right at the start.
- Time saving
You make the curriculum in advance. It's all ready in the e-learning software for new employees. Whether there are 1 or 20. You choose which components are relevant for whom and prepare them in advance. You no longer need a place, time or other resources for the onboarding. And that saves a lot of time and effort.
- Greater involvement
E-learning immediately increases involvement and this results in less turnover. Did you know that more than half of new employees who leave early make this decision within six months? (Source:
research of the American Brandon Hall Group
A good preparation: determine your training goal
As with many other things, preparation is also important when creating e-learning for the onboarding of employees. After all, you want the course material to fit in with the intended goals and to fit in well with the participant. Therefore, first describe a training objective and then sublearning objectives. These can be used as a basis for the chapter layout of the curriculum. See also the free template 'Write your course for the participant'.
Example of a training objective:
"At the end of the training, the new employee has become well acquainted with, and is able to name exactly what is expected of him".

The 5C coat rack: the sub leather goals
After formulating the training objective, it is good to also describe sub-learning objectives. When you make an onboarding training, the 5C coat rack proves to be very useful. Of course you choose the elements that are relevant for your company.
What are the legal rules? What do the company regulations say? For example, in the area of sick leave, holidays and confidentiality.
- Clarification
What will the new employee do? What does his job look like? What goals should he or she achieve? And what can and may he expect from the company?
What is the mission and vision of the company? What are the core values? When are there drinks or other activities? Bring new employees into the company culture.
- Connection
What does the organisational structure look like? And the social structure? Which networks can be useful for the new employee?
- Check back
How did the new employee experience onboarding? After 30 days, 60 days and after 3 months? We advise you not to skip this part, because it allows you to improve the course material and to connect better and better with new employees. Take advantage of the feedback given!
